Netflix has slapped a 60% rate hike on existing customers and you don't want to pay it. You want to cancel but you still need your streaming and dvd fix. Breath a sigh of relief as there are alternatives out there. Be warned some alternatives require the physical endurance to get off your couch, past your beloved mailbox and out into public spaces.
The DVD alternative
I'm not talking about the dreaded Blockbusters of the world that would cost you $4 a movie. I'm speaking of RedBox.com. Realize that RedBox is what every outraged Netflix subscriber will turn towards to get their DVD fix on the cheap. A spike in the demand for RedBox will leave the machine ravaged and looking more like an empty candy machine at a fat camp. You will have to plan your strategy wisely and execute your strategy with precision to ensure you secure the latest release. The DVD, while seemly the same is quite different. It can't be neglected and left under a pile of mail for the next couple of weeks, that will cost you dearly. Once viewed you will again need to labor past your beloved mailbox and actually return the rental old school style, to a physical location. Are you starting to flashback to the Blockbuster days of rushing to the dropbox before 12pm? Breath a slight sigh of relief as you no longer are hit with the double whammy of being late and not rewinding.
On demand Fix
You can scramble to each cable network to stream the latest tv show but that probably won't be in front of your TV. The best alternative to ensure you don't have to get off the couch is Amazon's streaming service. Interesting enough the future of Netflix is relying on streaming. Streaming is great but with Cable companies and the Amazons of the world, it's a wonder they will be able to hold their position for long. Amazon is a great alternative if you have a Prime account, but a Prime account will cost you $79 a year. Come on Netflix get your act together, you are trying to offer more movies and charge me higher premiums but you give me no bandwidth relief. I am sure there is a better way to compress your video, yet you increase the load with the HD picture I have come to demand. Next up is my internet provider to slap surcharges on my excessive bandwidth. As Amazon increases its hold, I am counting on them to address the bandwidth hogging issue. So Netlifx and its dominance will slowly slip into second place as people realize they outdated Netflix boxes can also access Amazon on demand services.
So who can you direct your anger towards
You can blame the movie studios for their greed or the Netflix stockholders for the increase. I blame the lawyers, as they will be the ones busier than ever suing all the people who revert back to illegally downloading of movies.
